Our Speech Pathology Services

At Leap Therapy Group, we provide comprehensive speech pathology assessments and therapy for children and adolescents across the Sutherland Shire. Our experienced Speech Pathologists deliver personalised, evidence-based support to help children build confidence in their communication, learning and everyday life.

We believe therapy works best when families are involved. That's why we take a family-centred approach, working closely with parents, schools, educators and other health professionals to create meaningful goals and practical strategies that support progress across home, school and the community.

Every child is unique. Our therapy is engaging, play-based where appropriate, and tailored to each child's strengths, interests and individual needs.

Expressive Language (Using Language)

Helping children develop the skills to express themselves clearly through spoken and written language by building vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, storytelling and written expression.

Speech Sound Development

Supporting children who have difficulty producing speech sounds clearly. This includes articulation difficulties, phonological disorders, childhood speech sound disorders and motor speech difficulties affecting speech clarity.

Phonological Awareness, Reading and Literacy

Developing the essential foundations for reading and spelling through evidence-based literacy intervention. Therapy targets phonological awareness, decoding, blending, segmenting, spelling, reading fluency and reading comprehension.

We also provide comprehensive Dyslexia Assessments and ongoing literacy intervention for children experiencing persistent reading and spelling difficulties.

Social Communication

Helping children develop the social communication skills needed to build friendships and participate confidently in everyday situations. Therapy may target conversation skills, turn-taking, understanding non-verbal communication, perspective taking, flexible thinking and interpreting social cues.

Fluency and Stuttering

Providing evidence-based assessment and therapy for children who stutter, helping them develop smoother, more confident communication while supporting families throughout the therapy process.

Memory and Learning Strategies

Teaching practical strategies to improve working memory, organisation, information recall and classroom participation, helping children become more independent learners.

Every therapy program is personalised to each child's strengths, goals and interests. We work closely with families to create meaningful, functional goals that support communication in everyday life.

Speech Pathology

Receptive Language (Understanding Language)

Supporting children who have difficulty understanding spoken language, following instructions, answering questions, learning new concepts and understanding increasingly complex language used at home and school.

Orofacial Myology

Our Speech Pathologists have completed specialised training in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy and provide assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs). These disorders can affect breathing, chewing, swallowing, speech and facial development.

Common signs of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders include:

  • Incorrect tongue resting posture

  • Mouth breathing

  • Tongue thrust swallow

  • Difficulty chewing efficiently

  • Thumb sucking or prolonged dummy use

  • Poor lip seal

  • Jaw instability

  • Speech difficulties related to oral muscle patterns

Following a comprehensive assessment, therapy may focus on:

  • Establishing correct tongue resting posture

  • Encouraging nasal breathing and healthy lip seal

  • Improving chewing and swallowing patterns

  • Eliminating oral habits such as thumb sucking

  • Strengthening and coordinating the muscles of the face, lips and tongue

  • Improving jaw stability and oral motor control

Our therapy programs are individualised and evidence-informed, supporting healthy oral function alongside speech and communication development.

Orofacial Myology focuses on improving the strength, coordination and function of the muscles of the face, lips, tongue and jaw.

Dyslexia Assessment

Our Speech Pathologists have undertaken additional training in literacy and dyslexia assessment, allowing us to provide comprehensive evaluations using evidence-based assessment practices.

Our assessments include:

  • Detailed parent interview

  • Review of school information and educational history

  • Standardised literacy and language assessments

  • Identification of strengths and areas of difficulty

  • Practical recommendations for home and school

  • Comprehensive written assessment report

Where appropriate, we work collaboratively with families and schools to determine whether your child meets the diagnostic criteria for dyslexia, including consideration of previous targeted literacy intervention.

Following assessment, we provide clear recommendations to support your child's ongoing learning and literacy development.

If your child is struggling with reading, spelling or literacy despite quality classroom instruction, a Dyslexia Assessment can help identify the underlying reasons and guide the most effective support.

Assessment

At Leap Therapy Group, every assessment is tailored to your child's age, developmental stage and individual concerns. We work collaboratively with parents, educators and other health professionals to build a complete understanding of your child's communication needs.

We provide assessment for:

  • Speech sound development

  • Language development

  • Early communication

  • Literacy and dyslexia

  • Social communication

  • Fluency and stuttering

  • Paediatric voice

  • Orofacial Myology

A thorough assessment is the first step towards understanding your child's strengths, identifying areas of difficulty and developing an effective therapy plan.

Individual Assessment

Our comprehensive individual assessments typically run for 90–120 minutes and are carefully tailored to each child.

Following the assessment, your Speech Pathologist will discuss the results, explain their findings and answer any questions you may have. A detailed written report, including recommendations and therapy goals, is then provided to guide ongoing support.

Therapy

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy sessions are available in 30, 45 or 60-minute appointments.

The recommended frequency of therapy depends on your child's needs, goals and family circumstances. Weekly sessions are often recommended initially to maximise progress through consistent practice and support.

Group Therapy

We also offer small group programs throughout the year, providing opportunities for children to develop communication skills in a supportive social environment.

Groups may focus on:

  • School readiness

  • Social communication

  • Language development

  • Early literacy

  • Parent education and coaching

Children are carefully matched based on their goals to ensure the best possible learning experience.

We also provide group programs within early childhood education settings, supporting children while building educator knowledge and confidence through collaborative practice.

Every child learns differently, which is why all therapy at Leap Therapy Group is personalised to suit your child's strengths, goals and interests.

We work collaboratively with families to develop meaningful goals and provide practical strategies that can be used beyond the therapy room.

Therapy Assistants

Our Therapy Assistants play an important role in helping children practise and generalise the skills they are learning in speech pathology sessions.

Working under the supervision of our experienced Speech Pathologists, Therapy Assistants provide additional opportunities for structured practice while following each child's individual therapy program.

Sessions may take place at home, school or within early childhood settings, allowing children to develop skills in real-life environments where they use communication every day.

Therapy goals are developed collaboratively between the Speech Pathologist, family and Therapy Assistant. Regular supervision and ongoing communication ensure therapy remains consistent, effective and aligned with best practice.
